Old Town Eureka
Renovated and revived, the foundation of Eureka from the early 1850’s. Commercial and residential buildings of Victorian architecture house unique gifts and antique shops, professional offices and restaurants. This charming waterfront area is a must see for any visitor.
Carson Mansion
(2nd and M Streets) Grand Victorian architecture built between 1884 and 1886 for pioneer lumberman William Carson, his wife and four children. Said to be the most photographed Victorian home in America. Drive-by touring only; not open to the public.
Clarke Memorial Museum
(240 E Street) North Coast and Humboldt County history from earliest Native Americans to modern times. Renowned displays of Native American Basketry and ceremonial regalia. Extensive collections of antiques, weapons, photographs and Victoriana. Open 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Group tours welcome. Donations requested. (707) 443-1947
Humboldt Bay Harbor Cruise
(Foot of C Street) Ride the oldest passenger-carrying vessel in operation in the U.S. This 1910 ferry cruises daily, March to October, with narrated tours and holiday cruises. The Madaket, a State Historic vessel, offers a 75 minute tour. (707) 445-1910
Sequoia Park and Zoo
(Glatt and W Streets) 77 acres of Redwoods, trails, picnic areas, playground, duck pond, formal garden. Softball field, horseshoes. 5-acre zoo, bear grotto, aviary, otter pond. Zoo is closed Mondays. Petting zoo open in summer. (707) 442-6552
Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum
(1410 2nd Street) Daily: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dedicated to North Coast maritime history. Artifacts, ship models, photos, etc. A uniquely filled museum behind the Carson Mansion. Take Third to P Street, turn towards the bay. Indoor and outdoor exhibits. (707) 444-9440
Fort Humboldt State Historic Park
(Highland Avenue off Broadway) Indian and military museums and historical logging exhibit at site of former U.S. Army fort. One block east of Broadway (U.S. 101) off Highland Avenue. Daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free. (707) 445-6567

Giant Redwoods - Redwood National and State Parks
Imagine this being you standing among the world's largest trees! Unique among national parks, it comprises an area set aside to protect “old growth” (ancient Redwood trees, many of which tower over 350 feet high. Lady Bird Johnson Grove, just north of Orick, is the site of the park’s dedication in 1969. It provides in one hour a slice of what the deep Redwood forest, unspoiled and mostly untouched is really like. (707) 464-6101
Fern Canyon–Wild Elk Reserve and Redwoods
Fern Canyon is located at the end of Gold Bluffs Beach road at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Take Davidson Road just north of Orick. Herds of wild Roosevelt Elk are found at Prairie Creek and at the beach, frequently offering close-up views of these magnificent animals.
Whale Watching
This activity has become very popular, and this area affords many opportunities to engage the visitor. The southern migratory season is September to January as the whales make their way to Baja. Between March and June, 21,000 of these spectacular mammals return to their northern waters. The best observation sites are high on cliffs overlooking the water. Try Shelter Cove, Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, Table Bluff, Wedding Rock in Patrick’s Point State Park, and Redwood National and State Parks. The Sequoia Park Zoological Society honors these mammals with an annual celebration complete with whale watching excursions and informational activities.
